What Can I Do to Help?
Steps Michigan
can Take Now to Clean up its Imported Trash Act...
- Begin by
strictly enforcing the new law that bans out-of-state waste not meeting
Michigan’s own standards such as car batteries, yard waste, returnables and
tires.
- Charge
dumping rates that are competitive with neighboring states. By no longer
importing trash into our state at dirt cheap rates, Michigan becomes a less
desirable trash destination.
- Charge
taxes and a tariff on each ton of trash we take in from areas outside
Michigan.
- Demand
stricter security inspections at the Canadian-U.S. border to interfere with
the possible transfer of substances that are toxic like PCBs and medical
wastes.
-
Discourage Canadian shipments of trash by enforcing the Agreement
Concerning the Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Waste. It’s a treaty in
which the EPA, defined as the “designated authority” for the US and has 30
days to accept or reject Canadian shipments of trash.
- Question
the legality of the Rockwood transfer station that was built without any city
permits.
- Demand
that this demolition debris be inspected like any other imported trash and
that, for once, the railroads will have to play by the same rules as everyone
else despite their 100 year special status based on the essential role they
play in American industry.
